Yilgarn River flows through the Mizzi’s Salt Farm
We are lucky to have the ancient Yilgarn River passing through our salt farm. It starts from the Seabrook and Deborah lakes which are between Coolgardie and Southern Cross a few hundred kilometres east from us.
In summer the river dries up although it is still flowing underground in the Yilgarn paleo channels at a salinity of around 15%. When it rains in Winter, initially the water that falls locally is brackish at around 5000 parts per million but after a few days when the rain water comes from far away the salinity grows to around 5% and the water table rises by about 50cm.
What is amazing is that the fairy shrimps come to life in the Yilgarn river which are carried along the river even from far away. They survive the 5% salinity which is greater than the ocean’s salinity which is around 3%.
We love it cause it nourishes the land with all the salt, minerals and clays that it brings to us.
